Celebrating the Clavichord With Recital, Poetry, Talks, & Hands-On Experience

Join us for a varied afternoon Celebrating the Clavichord! Special Guest Carol lei Breckenridge performs a recital of clavichord music of the 18th century, accompanied by poetry in praise of the instrument. You will also be treated to informal talks about the instrument, its literature and performance. A variety of clavichords will be available for attendees to explore and gain hands-on experience. If you are new to the clavichord, or an old friend, this is your opportunity to experience, listen, learn and deepen your appreciation!

Carol lei Breckenridge specializes in performing music of the 18th century on period instruments, particularly clavichord and fortepiano. A student of Malcolm Bilson, she is Professor Emerita from Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she held the Farver Professor of Music Chair. She will perform music by the Bach family and also speak on the topic: “Cantabile and the 18th-Century Clavichord.

Michael M. Herrick is a retired professional chef as well as a visual artist, writer, and poet. He is fluent in several languages, including French, German, Dutch, English Italian, and Spanish, and will read poetry dedicated to the instrument.

Paul Y. Irvin has over forty years experience building, repairing, and overhauling harpsichords and clavichords. He has served as President of The Midwestern Historical Keyboard Society and his articles appear in publications in North America and Europe. Paul will speak about the history and construction of the clavichord in a talk entitled “The First Expressive Keyboard Instrument”.
