Spencer Reynolds began his music studies a week before he turned four years old, when he started taking piano lessons. He successfully completed a ten-year course of study, the Certificate of Merit program directed by the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). The Certificate of Merit tests students’ performance proficiency as well as their music theory knowledge and aural skills. Because of his talent, he was frequently invited to play at their conferences. At age nine, he acquired his first harpsichord, fell in love with the instrument, and started lesson with Dr. Yuko Tanaka, with whom he studied until leaving for college. Under her tutelage, he participated in several Junior Bach Festivals and two BFX Fringe performances. Spencer’s interest in music has always leaned towards the Baroque era. To further that interest, he started at age eleven taking organ lesson with Dr. Angela Kraft Cross, under whose direction he also appeared in several Junior Bach Festivals, including those in which he played both organ and harpsichord. In addition to his regular music instructions, he has taken musical direction from Peter Sykes, Matthew Dirst, Mark Kroll, Douglas Amrine, Lillian Gordis and Mark Edwards among others.
Spencer’s interest in harpsichords extends beyond playing. Early on he discovered he had a natural aptitude for working on harpsichords and other early keyboard instruments. He initially received help and direction from San Francisco harpsichordist and technician Eugene Petrushansky. He also consulted with harpsichord builders Kevin Fryer and John Phillips. During the last four years he has worked aside clavichord builder Gary Blaise. Mr. Blaise has taught him the basic aspects of instrument building and how to apply such knowledge for the repair and restoration of harpsichords and clavichords. Since starting this sideline, Spencer has repaired or refurbished about forty instruments.
In conjunction with his organ studies, he was a board member at large for the San Francisco American Guild of Organists (SFAGO), 2025-2026.
Currently, Spencer is a Freshman at the University of North Texas (UNT), where he’s majoring in organ performance while also keeping up his harpsichord studies. His instructor for both instruments is Dr. Malcolm Matthews, a prominent and well-noted harpsichordist. As part of his studies, Spencer holds a position with the college as its harpsichord technician.
